The unintended expatriate blogger behind Distant Signal Harbor

Hi there, I'm Alex
I work as a project manager. Parent. Expat living in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
A few years back, I moved here with my family. What started as a temporary contract gradually turned into a new chapter of life abroad.
Origins
Relocating to Netherlands wasn’t part of the long-term plan. Like many expat moves, it began as a work opportunity and quickly grew into something much larger.
The initial months were demanding — new systems, new routines, new expectations. Everyday tasks seemed more complicated than they ought.
The Adjustment Period
There was culture shock, uncertainty, and a lot of learning by doing. But slowly, routines formed. We discovered places that worked for us, met other families, and started building something that felt stable.
Why I Built Distant Signal Harbor
Most information online was either corporate relocation guidance or shallow tourism content. What was missing was an honest, everyday family viewpoint.
This site aims to bridge that gap — practical guidance drawn from real life in Netherlands.
What This Site Is (And Isn't)
This site OFFERS:
- Practical know-how from living in Netherlands
- Centered on family life and daily realities
- Updated whenever something meaningful changes
This site DOESN'T:
- Not a tourism-industry resource
- Not a sponsored review platform
- Not a generic travel blog
Moving Forward
Our time in Netherlands continues, and so does the learning process. As long as this information remains helpful, I will continue documenting what we discover.
If you have questions about family life in Amsterdam or anywhere in Netherlands, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Warm regards,
Alex
